SS Numbers on a Direct Mail Piece
We have a data breach story today that baffles the mind. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center sent out donor solicitation letters with actual patients’ social security numbers on the envelopes. We often think of data breaches occurring only in cyberspace, but big time mistakes do happen in the non-cyberworld. In other healthcare data breach news, if you had a baby in Georgia, your personal data could be compromised.

Such breach is a positive proof that individuals simply need to fend for themselves when it comes to Identity Theft. Never give out any personal information unless it is a must. In addition, individuals should always monitor their credit report, and consider a credit freeze. Additional steps to deter identity theft are available at http://www.creditlock.com and are also available at the FTC website
To bms: Credit freeze is overkill. If you live normal live you will need your credit to open cards or apply to loans. Freezing it just adds to the headache and pain. Besides it does not stop thieves from applying for a job or getting medical treatment.
