Summer Travel Tips - Tip #2 Turning Dollars into Dinars
With the US Dollar at the weakest levels that this writer can remember, if you’re leaving the country, you’ll want to try to get the best exchange possible. Usually you can get the best deal by using your ATM card to withdraw money overseas. You may pay ATM access fees and your bank may charge an exchange fee (around 3% - check with your bank before you go), but overall it will cost you less than other options. Using your credit card for purchases when possible is also a good way to get better exchange rates. FlyerGuide has more details to help you decide which way is best for you.
A note on using foreign ATMs - use ATMs at an actual brick and mortar bank location instead of a stand-alone one when possible. If your pin begins in a zero you may want to change it before you leave. Some foreign ATMs don’t give that as an option. Also, memorize your code as a number as some are not labeled with corresponding letters.
And if your ATM card is ever “eaten” by a machine, notify your bank right away so they can put a hold on any further transactions. Another reason to bring a backup!
